5 practices to avoid burnout

We all feel it at some point. If you are aware, you know the signs before you get to the burnout point. Either way there is always something you can do about it. I think the key is to find what works best for you and sometimes it’s trying a few things until you figure it out. Here are some things that work for me.

1. Brain Dump

Call this brain dump or journaling, it’s basically getting all your thoughts out. I try to do this every day but I find this the most helpful when things are feeling hard. A lot of times when I start to write down how I’m feeling and exploring those thoughts, it prompts an inspirational post because more than likely there are other people going through the same thing.

I like to set a timer for 5 minutes and just write freely. Anything goes! It’s ok to jump from one subject to the next, the idea is to just get it all out!

2. Movement

I suggest doing a movement that you enjoy doing. I know everyone talks about mediation but meditation may not be for you. Just because everyone does it doesn’t mean it’s right for you too.

Do what feels good because if you don’t, you won’t do it.

What energy level do you enjoy? Do you like doing a low impact or high energy movement? Maybe you need both. I know I do.

I found Kundalini. I feel like I’m getting meditation in with mantras and faster movement than yoga but not full high intensity. If I’m wanting more intensity, Zumba is a favorite because I love to dance. I need high intensity movement that feels fun. Both of these are a good balance for me.

Find out what works for your energy level. Also, do it in a time stretch that works for you. I’m a busy mom so I find that Kundalini or Zumba sessions can’t be more than 30 minutes. Anything more and I’m almost positive I won’t stick with it. So even if you can only commit to 10 minutes, that’s better than nothing! After moving I am motivated to do more things because my energy is up. Just like Tony Robbins says,

“Emotion is created by motion. Whatever you’re feeling right now is related to how you’re using your body.”

Change your state of mind with motion.

3. Indulge Yourself

Self-care takes on many forms. Yes, we have the spiritual side like meditation but I’m talking about doing something just for fun. While it’s always good to look inward with journaling and meditation sometimes you just want to get that instant feel good feeling and there is nothing wrong with that!

Like there’s something about getting my hair and nails done. I feel that I look good and polished which gives me confidence instantly.

So get a facial, massage, eat the ice cream! Get yourself flowers. Sometimes it’s doing something that you have been wanting to do but have been putting off like take a painting class. Whatever it is, treat yourself!

4. Give Back

Take the focus away from you and help others. There is no way that you cannot feel good doing this. Giving boosts physical and mental health. You can give to your community, do something nice for your followers and you can always do something a little extra for your clients. Sure it’s nice to donate or volunteer but the gift doesn’t have to be big. You can send a notecard in the mail. People love getting happy mail! If you have kids this is a great one to include them.

5. Get Some Zzzz’s!

This one might be last on this list but it is probably the most important. I know when I’m feeling down or sluggish all I really needed the whole time was sleep! Don’t neglect this one, it’s so simple and yet we put it off because we feel like we need to get all the things done. Heck at the time of this post I am almost 6 months pregnant. I take one 30 minute nap a day and it feels good! You don’t need to be pregnant to take a day nap. Try it! Life changer.
